When I saw the rumors about Evangeline Lilly tagging Corey Stoll (seemingly deceased Darren Cross from Ant-Man), coupled with Michelle Williams hinting Quantum Realm energy changes molecular structures in the human body in Ant-Man & The Wasp, it got me to thinking. Is it possible Cross somehow survived, entered the Quantum Realm, and was transformed over time into Annihilus? When Annihilus was first introduced in the Fantastic Four comics, I really was drawn to him/it. But it didn’t make a lot of sense that a weird insectoid in the Negative Zone would learn command of the English language just by acquiring the Cosmic Control Rod. It does give the possessor telekinesis and telepathy but it still seemed a little odd.
The modern Annihilus seems a little less verbose and I think that was by design in keeping with his origin. But suppose the MCU didn’t want to introduce the Negative Zone and deal with all the “real world considerations” of another extra-terrestrial setting re: gravity, pressure, temperature, etc. What if in the MCU, Annihilus comes from the Quantum Realm, and in fact, is a mutated human…Darren Cross, for example! As cool as the comic book Annihilus character design is (and it is one of the best ever, I hope to one day own a Hot Toy of it), an MCU version would likely be a simplified a bit here and there. His Yellowjacket suit could form the foundation of the Annihilus exo-skeleton.
We’ll see. This is a pretty far-fetched theory, I will readily admit.
