Full disclosure: I had intended to write this post back in July 2019 and some work-related things came up that interrupted me. Here is an updated version.
When I first saw The Darkhold on Agents Of Shield, I wanted to simultaneously laugh and cry. The cover, no lie, had the word “Darkhold” IN ENGLISH in heavily embossed lettering. An argument can be made that it would appear in whatever language it needed to based on the reader, but that is still lame. Books like that would not have their title on the cover. They are unique and almost always for the use of their author, in this case, Ch’thon.
My motivation for theorizing it would show up again was twofold: 1) Take the taste out of the mouths of the faithful from that cheap-looking prop; and 2) Talk of Marvel exploring more magic in years to come.
Fast forward to WandaVision in 2021. The Darkhold is back! Much more ancient looking, smaller in size. Wanda Maximoff yoinks it from Agatha Harkness (how did Agatha get it?) and takes off to study it in more detail. There is probably nothing good that will come of that. Likely, it will open a path for powerful demons to enter Wanda’s dimension. Poor Earth…out of all the planets in the universe, it became the home of three Infinity Stones, which made it an automatic target.
It will be interesting to learn about Doctor Strange’s depth of knowledge about The Darkhold, something he would have wanted to lock up himself if at all possible. That should be explained in Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness.
