Tony Stark in the MCU and Tony Stark in his original Marvel Comics run definitely share a world-renowned knowledge of mechanical engineering, robotics, physics, chemistry — to name just a few. In Avengers: Endgame he shoots down the discussion about time travel by invoking some (I assume) quantum physics-related theories. He very likely studied quantum physics in college and perhaps had discussions about time travel with peers across the globe.
In 1991, Tony’s parents were murdered as part of a plot to obtain the super-soldier serum that created Captain America. Stark was of course devastated by this, and his struggles to cope contributed to his subsequent alcoholism. His reaction in Avengers: Endgame was particularly aggressive — it indicates that perhaps he had explored the possibility previously in order to undo that family tragedy, and had a lingering frustration he was never able to piece it all together.
His death in Endgame was particularly poignant in that the birth of his daughter continued the “timeline” of his family, even if he never had the opportunity to fix it through his genius.
